When Do Student Houses Come on the Market?
When should you start looking for student accommodation? And will all the best places be gone if you leave it too late?
Whether you’re just about to start uni, or you’ve spent a year in halls and you’re ready to move into a house or flat, in this post we’ll explore some key things to think about when choosing your student accommodation.
When Do Student Houses Come on the Market?
This will vary from city to city. In Nottingham, for example, where we operate, we tend to see student houses come on the market in October and November. Many places are already filled by the Christmas break.
So in every university city in the UK, there’s usually a rush to get the best student accommodation. Your student union will probably advise you against taking part in this rush. They might point out that there’s so much student accommodation in each city that you’ll be able to find somewhere to live no matter when you start looking.
So When Should You Start Looking for Student Accommodation?
If you want to get somewhere that ticks all of your boxes, then it does pay to start looking as early as possible. But don’t panic! Don’t rush into renting somewhere that might not meet your needs, just because you’re worried about missing out.
If you want to know more about the student housing situation in your city:
- Talk to your student union. They’ll be able to advise you on the best time to start looking, and the best areas to look in. They’ll also tell you how much you should expect to pay in terms of rents and utilities, so you can be sure you’re getting a good deal.
- Talk to older students. They can tell you about their experiences in getting their first student house, including when they first started looking.
- Bookmark the student accommodation specialists in your city. We’ll be the first to tell you about the best student accommodation in Nottingham, for example!
Your First Student House – Things to Think About
- How many people will be in your student house? How many housemates will you have to find? Two? Three? Four? Or maybe you intend to live by yourself in dedicated student accommodation?
- Who are you going to live with? Pick your housemates carefully. It’s important that you get along with them, sure. But it’s much more important that you can depend on them – to pay their rent and bills on time, and to do their fair share of housework.
- Where are you going to live? Think about local amenities, access to public transport, and other practical things. But also think about safety. What’s the crime like in the area? Is it somewhere you’d feel safe walking by yourself? If you’re thinking of studying in our part of the world, take a look at our guide to the best places to live in Nottingham.
- Do you know what you’re looking for? Or to put it another way, how can you be sure that the student house you choose will truly meet your needs? To help you make the right choice, we put together a short guide to the best questions to ask when viewing student houses.
